A Talk
He shut the door and walked into the room. He took off his coat and then sat down on the stool to untie his shoelaces. She looked up at him, surrounded by books, notes and three different kinds of calculators, and said, ''We need to talk.''
''Uh oh.'' he said.
''What?'' she asked.
''Nothing,'' he replied, grinning, ''Its just that in my profession, 'we need to talk', is probably like the most ominous phrase ever.''
''No, look. I'm serious.'' she said, unsuccessfully trying to shift the mountain of notes and papers around. ''I'm sick and tired and I hate myself. My life is over. I quit. I'm going to go back.''
He didn't say anything. He took off his socks and walked the length of the room to throw them in the laundry basket.
''Dude! Say something!'' she cried, taking off her glasses and rubbing her eyes.
''Your life isn't over. It can't be over till you say its over,'' he said slowly.
''Well I'm saying its over,'' she snapped back.
''Idiot. Tell me, what is the best thing that's ever happened to you.'' drawing his flip-flops from under the bed.
''You?'' she said, smiling.
''No, you moron!'' he replied bursting into laughter, ''the best thing that ever happened to you was you!''
''You know what, you're not making any sense, I'm going to call Kathy.'' she said, lifting up a six inch thick book to look for the phone.
''Yes, go on. Call Kathy. After all, she does give the best advice.'' he retorted from the bathroom, where he was washing his face.
She glared in his direction and proceeded to dial Kathy's number. She hung up after a few seconds, her forehead knitted in a frown. ''Its going to voicemail.''
''Look.'' he said, wiping his face with the towel. ''What is wrong with you? What is this about suddenly?''
''I can't do this, its too hard. This is... NOT WHAT I HAD SIGNED UP FOR!'''
''Okay! Look. Don't become hysterical. I can't deal with you if you become hysterical. Calm down. Take. Deep. Breaths. Its not that hard. You're smart and hard-working. You can totally get through this, if you don't panic and stay stuff like 'my life is over'.''
He walked over to the bed and took her hand in his. ''I'm here, I will always be here. If you mess up, ever. And I'm not saying you will,'' he added warily. ''I'm just saying that if you do, I'll be here and I'll help you to set it right. Okay? Feeling better? Want to go out and take a break?''
''Oh yes, that sounds so nice.''
''Great. So where do you want to go? The cafe?'' he said, picking up his coat.
''Oh no! Lets go to the bar!'' she called out excitedly after him.
''Ha ha,'' he said, and added seriously, ''Lets not overdo it, shall we?''
They walked out of the room hand in hand and shut the door behind them.
